In addition to taking advantage of the reflective surface of polished stainless steel (left and below), I work with recycled, welded Cor-Ten steel. Also known as “weathering steel” because of its resistance to corrosion, Cor-Ten is an alloy used heavily in industry (ship building, bridge construction) and also by artists attracted to its raw, rust-colored surfaces. The Totems are tall (up to 15 feet), vertical sculptures with kinetic parts. The smaller metal pieces are, for the most part, abstract but also include some that are whimsical in nature. Many of the metal sculptures incorporate bells of various dimensions and tone. They populate our high desert property and respond evocatively (and sometimes loudly) to the windy conditions.
